Moveable Alpha

Special Situations Investing

We explore actionable investing ideas that are…

Event Driven

Special Situations Investing centers around event driven change. That is, something in the future that will unlock value within a company.

Uncorrelated to Market

With outcomes tied to a specific event, such as a merger, spin-off, legal outcome, etc., Special Situations Investing is generally uncorrelated with the broader market.

Measurable in Outcomes

With a limited number of outcomes, Special Situations Investing allows for a very narrowly defined thesis. Much more so than say a focus on growth or sentiment investing.

Eliminating the Clutter

Special Situations Investing benefits from being an uncrowded corner of the Market. But, with roughly 7,500 publicly listed companies in the U.S. and Canada alone, the Market itself has no shortage of noise.

At Moveable Alpha, the aim is to eliminate the noise and focus on situations that offer a better risk adjusted return than the broader market.

Through our Sunday Circular and Active Idea write ups, we provide actionable ideas through data and research.

Sunday Circular

A bi-monthly publication highlighting +100 companies undergoing some sort of catalyst along with updates, important diligence links and a bit of commentary.

Active Ideas

Write ups on those situations we find to be investment worthy. Ideas are split between Core Ideas and Quick Pitches, with outcome tracking provided in a portfolio performance manner.

  • "The team behind Moveable Alpha has a knack for distilling down complex situations into a digestible format. I do not have a professional finance background but the manner in which ideas are presented is as valuable for the learning as they are as investments."

About Moveable Alpha

Moveable Alpha started as a private circular amongst financial industry colleagues to dig into Special Situations Investments. Born out of frustration around not being able to pursue such opportunities in their professional capacities, it ran ad-hoc for several years before being formalized into the Moveable Alpha platform in mid-2024.

Contributors to the ideas presented have a wide array of backgrounds spanning financial roles in private equity, fund management, corporate finance to non-financial ones such as engineering and software development. Research is conducted in an institutional manner and meant to be applicable to professional capital allocators. However, the presentation aims to be approachable and to the point
